Today I Googled... Papua New Guinea

Today is Geography and World Culture day..

(btw, is there anyone out here who enjoys watching Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?? i just watched the episode where Tony Hawk made an appearance =) )

i have always wondered...
where is this country actually?
how do the people look like?
what is their staple food?
do they have their unique one of a kind traditional music?
is the country nice?

i found the answers!!
"Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, just north of Australia, and many outlying islands. The Indonesian province of West Papua (Irian Jaya) is to the west."

i know, i know. this is a boring fact. haha, but tell you what? it's a country with rich cultures and traditions and nice sandy beaches (somehow, it's similar to Malaysia, except for the fact that the country is under developed. maybe it's better that way, 'cause we do need a country with untouched (although not fully) beauty)

go google it!!

rather than going to Africa to be in touch with nature, how about going somewhere closer to home my fellow South East Asians? =)

Serenity... everywhere..! i can fall asleep in this place for days even if there are mosquitoes bugging me. damn you mosquitoes! =P just throw me a nice quilt and a fluffy pillow and my Abu, i'll be gone to slumberland for eternity =)

The food?

hmm.. i found two recipes. might be worth trying at home.

Chicken Pot (Adapted to Port Moresby)
one chicken cut into serving pieces
a little oil
kaukau (sweet potato)
bunch of green onions
pumpkin tips
cobs of corn
2 coconuts for cream
salt to taste
curry powder to taste
1. Place chicken in the pot with a little oil if necessary.
2. Chop kaukau and place on top of chicken.
3. Coarsely chop green onion and add next.
4. Coarsely chop pumpkin tips and add next.
5. Peel and break corn to place on top of greens.
6. Squeeze coconut milk over the meat and vegetables to cover.
7. Cover and bring to a boil.
8. Cook gently for 30-40 minutes.
9. Add salt and curry powder.
10. Serve as a meal. You could separate the vegetables and meat for
serving and place the liquid in a container to serve as a sauce or soup.

Coconut with Mixed Vegetables
6 cups of mixed vegetables(whatever is available for instance you can use any of the following carrots, snake beans, kau kau or sweet potato, zucchini, green or red peppers, eggplant, potatoes and peas)1 crushed clove of garlic2 fresh small chillies, seeded and chopped½ cup fresh coconut cream,½ cup grated coconut2 tablespoons of oilBoil a cup of water in a saucepanBoil each vegetable separately in the same waterEnsure that each vegetable is lightlycooked but still firm to biteUse a little more water if it has evaporatedDo not throw away the water once you have cookedthe vegetablesMix together all the ingredientswith the saved vegetable waterand bring to the boil. Add all the vegetables and simmer gently for five minutes.Serve with plain, boiled white or brown rice.

As you can see, coconut is a must in a Melanesian dish. do try these at home. Abu, i hope you'll enjoy them if i ever cook them =) i tried to put up some pictures of the food but it was a failed attempt. but you can always google it yourself =)

i found this country as one great escapade!! maybe i'll go there one day. but not for my honeymoon 'cause i want to spend my honeymoon in NY! the big apple!
so long..
till tomorrow, take care everyone
